THE CENTER'S MISSION
The North Florida Center for Documentary Studies, Inc. explores, documents, and celebrates both human culture and the natural world of North Florida. Our exhibit, "The Healing Ground" traveled to the Suwannee Valley Regional Library, the State of Florida Nature and Heritage Center, Stephen Foster Park, and the Hamilton County Courthouse.
Beginning with her 1960 interviews with black and white descendants of Florida pioneers, Sudye Cauthen, who founded NFCDS in 1997, has dedicated herself to documenting this area, particularly its peoples' connections to the land. Her first book, SOUTHERN COMFORTS: Rooted in a Florida Place, tells the story of her explorations over a thirty-year period. To see what's next, visit our Works-in-Progress page.
